Old Town Plovdiv

Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe, even older than Rome and Athens. The city emerged in the 4th millennium BC on the Plovdiv Three Hills when the Thracians established a settlement on Nebet Tepe. In the 4th century BC, it was conquered by Philip II of Macedon, who renamed it Philippopolis. Later, the Thracians regained control, but after a series of battles in the 1st century, the Romans captured it. Of course, this is not the entire history. Dzhumaya Mosque

According to some historians and archaeologists, Dzhumaya Mosque was built on the site of a Christian church dedicated to Saint Petka of Bulgaria after her forces passed through Plovdiv in 1228. In the 19th century, Lyuben Karavelov wrote that the mosque had been a church in the past. This theory is entirely based on local myths and legends and cannot be supported by evidence. Others completely reject this idea because during the restoration work in 2006-2008, the foundations of the building were reached, but no traces of previous construction were found. Children’s Railway “Banner of Peace”

The railway was established in 1979 by students and pupils with the support of Plovdiv’s citizenship for the 35th anniversary of the Dimitrov Pioneer Organization “Septemvriyche” and the first assembly “Banner of Peace.” It has a platform, two tracks, and a traffic light. One ride takes approximately 25 minutes and costs 1 lev.
